Lesson 3: Debating society

In different groups
Find what are the causes of this waste of energy (human activity as it is) which consequences are: polluted air and water, global warming, economic and social disturbances (groups 1 and 2)

Find arguments going in the sense of what the trailer of An Inconvenient Truth presents (groups 3 and 4)

Find arguments that show global warming is just a normal cycle and won't affect our societies (groups 5 and 6)

Oral presentation scheduled on October 7. 10 minute-presentation. Visual document expected. Written report on your research method (time taken, difficulties encountered, task sharing...) expected on the same day.

Lesson 2: What are the risks if we don't go sustainable ?

Recap what the four principles of sustainability are:
Reduce our use of fossil fuels and heavy metals, reduce our dependence on synthetic chemicals, stop our destruction of nature, stop preventing people globally from meeting their needs.

If we go sustainable we will:
Waste less, pollute less, have a higher quélity of life, produce things we value more in society while improving the chances for the earth to provide us with what we need to survive

Unsustainabilty can cause : Global warming because of human activity

An Inconvenient Truth, 2006

Type of document :
a film trailer

Who presents ? Who is he ?
Al Gore introduces himself as "the next president of the USA" he ran for president in 2000 against George W. Bush and lost the elections.

Appraisals :
The most terrifying film you will see -- will shake you to the core -- if you love your planet, if you love your children you have to see this film --  shocked audience everywhere it was seen
Color in red the period when the temperatures were the hottest. The hottest year was :
1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005

What pictures illustrate the topic ? What is the most striking example ?

Causes: fatctories, cars, fumes, houses, destruction of nature. Concequences: global warming, sea levels rise, ice melt, snow melts, stronger hurricanes....

What is the topic compared to ? terrorism

What do scientists believe? They believe the the human activity is the cause of global warming

Recap all you understood using this chart :

Unsustainability causes
global warming
 climate change
 ice melting
 sea level rising
climatic disturbances
- stronger tornadoes
- stronger hurricane
- floods
- droughts
- stronger storms
- polar vortex
destruction, climatic exiles, deaths

What is at stake ? "Our ability to live on Earth" if we continue that way, the Earth is going to counter balance the change and wipe away the cause of its imbalance ie humans

Lesson 1: What is sustainability? Explained through animated cartoons

Definition of sustainability
things can go on forever

Sustainability for our planet
it can continue to do what it was designed to do

What our planet was designed to do (4 things)
- provide food
- provide fresh air
- provide clean water
- high quality of life for everyone

Contrary of sustainability

The four basic principles of sustainability for our planet
- reduce our dependence on fossil fuels & heavy metals
- reduce our use of synthetic chemicals
- reduce our destruction of nature
- allow everyone to meet their needs

Consequence of the growth of the population
demand for food, air, water has grown too

Cause of the destruction of Nature
our demands for more

Complete this diagram which represents our system. Use the following words: economy, environment and society.

society - environment - economy

What it means :
the earth is a system we are dependent upon

Consequences of sustainability for our future (5 things)
pollute less -- waste less -- high quality of life -- create more things we value in society -- improving the chances for the earth to provide us with things we need to survive
